Hopkins Clinic
offers a medical weight management plan for mildly to moderately obese
individuals under the supervision of John A. Gianoli III, M.D. Although this
service is commonly offered in conjunction with the Smartlipo™ laser assisted
liposuction program, Dr. Gianoli is also happy to provide the treatment for
patients who are interested in improving their health and appearance without
participating in the Smartlipo™ treatment. This weight management program is
designed for those who are seeking a quick but healthy loss in their weight.
This is not a long term program. For patients interested in more substantial
weight loss over an extended period of time, we are happy to refer you to a
specialist in this field for a more comprehensive long term program. Weight loss
can be obtained by many methods such as simply reducing your caloric intake but
this can sometimes be unhealthy and often very difficult to do. With so many
demands on your time from the busy world we live in, medical weight management
is an effective way for many people to quickly reduce their weight. This is
made possible with a combination of appetite suppressant medications, dietary
changes and physical activity. With this combination, many people can lose up to
10 pounds in the first week and another 10-15 pounds in the following three to
six weeks. Due to the many factors involved with lifestyle and overall health of
each individual, this weight loss cannot be guaranteed but the results above can
be considered typical when following the plan.
Stages of Weight Loss
1st Stage: During the 1st
stage of a lower calorie diet, your body uses up its stores of
carbohydrates in the muscles. You can easily experience rapid weight
loss due to the loss of these carbohydrates as they are also rich in
water. The more of your carbohydrate stores that you use, the more
water you lose (through increased urination and sweat losses).
2nd Stage: Your body will begin to use stored fat and protein as
sources of energy as long as you continue eating a lower calorie
diet. Regular physical activity is essential at this time to
minimize muscle mass loss. Weight loss may still be rapid however it
is mainly due to water, carbohydrate and protein losses.
3rd Stage: Your body begins to use stored body fat as its main
energy source. Weight loss slows down however the weight loss is
primarily body fat loss.
4th Stage: Both weight and body fat are decreasing in this stage as
long as an energy imbalance is maintained (less calories in than
needed to maintain current body composition).
