Of course, the degree of improvement will be different for everyone and depends on the number of treatments and the time interval.

WHAT IS THE TREATMENT ACTUALLY LIKE?

The treatments are simple, office-based procedures with little or no down time. The treatment area is covered with a thin layer of cool, clear gel and the entire face or damaged areas of the face, arms, hands, chest or lower abdomen are treated. The application of light and RF energy stimulates the production of your own new collagen and shrinks excessive pigmentation or small blood vessels. Each treatment takes about 30 minutes. Each pulse lasts less than half a second and causes a very tolerable sting with a temporary warming sensation. The changes in the skin are incremental with each treatment and most clients show best results after a series of five treatments each separated by a three-week interval. This provides sufficient time between treatments for your skin to begin the repair of damage caused by aging and sun exposure. Lighter skin colors achieve the best results but improvements can be achieved in all colors of skin. Patients need to understand that gentler treatments are designed to stimulate your own skin to rejuvenate itself. Consequently, the process takes time and rate and degree of improvement is different in every patient.

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

It is good to pamper yourself on treatment day! Try not to be hurried and stressed before you arrive. Having a nourishing breakfast or lunch, and an extra glass of water prior to your treatment will make you more comfortable. You should be avoiding unprotected sunlight or UV light exposure. If you have not been vigilant about this let our skin care team know so that they can tailor your treatment accordingly.

Please wear no makeup, or makeup that is easy to remove, so that the area to be treated can be clearly seen. You can bring makeup with you, and you may apply your makeup immediately after treatment. Our skin care specialists can also give you some makeup tips or introduce you to our Obagi Skin Care Product Line.

POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Nearly every patient will have some degree of redness that will last one or two hours. Any persistent redness or swelling should be treated by applying a cold cloth or ice pack to the area for 15-20 minutes. If you develop any blistering you should apply a cold pack frequently to this area and contact our office for further instructions.

Dark spots and capillaries frequently become darker and more visible after a treatment. The darker areas gradually migrate to the skin surface and flake off after several days. You can resume your home skin care routine the following day unless otherwise advised. Your next treatment will be scheduled before you leave the office to optimize the benefit of your treatments. You will notice your skin feeling smoother immediately following treatment. Your skin color will gradually become more uniform with fine lines showing improvement after several treatments.

What results can I expect?

You can expect to see a gradual decrease in overall redness, flushing and dilated capillaries. People with visible aging from the sun can expect to see their skin become smoother with a decrease in fine wrinkles, reduction in pore size and fading of sun spots. Many people with rosacea see improvement in breakouts and are able to decrease or discontinue their medications.

What is involved in Photo Rejuvenation treatments?

Each treatment takes approximately 45-60 minutes. A mild amount of discomfort can be expected. Individuals with more sensitivity may prefer to use a topical anesthetic cream which is applied 15-30 minutes prior to treatment. There is typically no discomfort after Photo Rejuvenation treatments. Immediately following a treatment, the skin may appear more red and flushed and the brown spots generally appear slightly darker. Over the next several days, the brown spots increase in their color, and then subsequently fade over the next following days.

When will I see results?

After your first treatment, your skin will feel smoother and will have more even tone. Improvement is gradual and will continue to be more visible after each treatment. Many individuals experience dramatic results only after 1-2 treatments; however, five treatments are performed for optimal results. Some patients will benefit from additional treatments.

How long after treatment can I resume normal activity?

You can usually return to all activity within one hour of treatment.

ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY

The Syneron ELOS Technology laser combines a diode laser at 900 nanometers and bipolar conducted radiofrequency (“RF”). The unique properties of combining and layering laser and RF is described as Matrix Heating, which results in the desired and profound heating of the dermis necessary for wrinkle reduction. Matrix Heating effectively creates “pockets” of heat which results in fibrosis, or scarring of dermal tissue. This activates fibroblasts signaling new collagen to form and existing collagen to tighten as a response to perceived injury. This differs from the traditional methods of wrinkle reduction and their limitations: ablative laser skin resurfacing or non-ablative weak dermal heating lasers and light sources. Effective heating of the dermis is achieved through this Electro-Optical Synergy (ELOS) while the remodeling is achieved in 3-5 treatments with the Syneron ELOS Technology laser.

Laser – 900 nanometers diode

The wavelength of the laser bypasses the epidermal melanin barrier. This is due to the relative weak absorption of 900 nm by superficial melanin, allowing even darker skin to be treated. The superficial epidermis is protected from thermal over-load by the contact cooling on the applicator tip.

Radiofrequency (RF)

The RF energy is conducted through bi-polar electrodes, and safely distributes heat to the dermal layers. The peak current density for RF is about 1.5 to 2 mm in depth. This is determined by the geometry of the bipolar electrode design, where the approximate depth of penetration is half the distance between the electrodes. RF has been used in medicine and surgery for a century and poses no long-term risk. The contact cooling at the applicator tip lowers the temperature of the epidermis, thereby forcing the RF down into the dermis.
